A regular service keeps your car reliable, safe and cheaper to run — and keeps a full service history, which protects resale value. Here's what's involved and how to find a garage near you.
What a service usually includes
An engine oil and filter change; checks on brakes, tyres, steering and suspension; lights, wipers and washers; battery and charging; fluid levels and leaks; and a report of anything that needs attention now or soon. A full service adds air and cabin filters and a longer inspection list.

How often should I service my car?
Most cars need a service every 12 months or every 15,000–20,000 km, whichever comes first. Check your handbook — some cars use a variable service indicator. Lots of short journeys means oil should be changed more often.
Full or interim service?
An interim service covers oil, filter and safety checks. A full service adds more filters, fluids and a longer inspection list. A major service also replaces scheduled items like spark plugs.
Is a service the same as the NCT?
No. The NCT is a legal roadworthiness test; a service is preventative maintenance. A good service reduces the chance of failing but doesn't replace the test — see pre-NCT inspection.
